WEEK 8: Lights & Post-Processing

During the class, we explored lighting and post-processing. I liked it when I saw the light options were similar to what I’ve used in Maya or Cinema 4D before, so that didn’t daunt me as much. Post-processing was a bit tougher to understand; however, it was exciting how it affected the scene.

This week, I began modelling the first three scenes in Maya, creating the character and rigging with Mariana.

The modelling part was a lot of fun; I really enjoy creating things from scratch using a simple geometric shape. For most scenes, I used a cube and added vertices, extruding it until I achieved the desired look. I then applied the subdivisions to see how it would look at the end.

As for the character, it was a great challenge. As I mentioned before, I had never rigged before, and I found it really meticulous and easy to make a mistake. Mariana advised using Advanced Skeleton to make it a bit ‘easier’. First, assigning the bones to their proper positions, then skinning the rig, and finally testing it out. Not doing to lie, I had to redo these steps like 10 times because I missed steps or they didn’t work at all. This week I had something, but my rig kept breaking when I moved it. I’ll speak to Mariana next week to ask for help.

This was what kept happening, and also when moved from side to side, the eyes and hair (doesn’t appear here to show the malla breaking) they stayed back and didn’t move with the rig.
