WEEK 1: Golden Poses

On the other hand, regarding Characters, we learned about the Golden Pose. This concept refers to the strong, readable silhouette that conveys a character’s actions and emotions, making them legible to the audience. Core elements, including a strong silhouette, a clear line of action, expressive composition, balance, and readability, were explained. Additionally, we examined key poses and their corresponding meanings, along with practical tips for creating these poses ourselves. For instance, we learned to exaggerate key shapes, separate limbs and the torso to reduce visual clutter, and avoid perfect symmetry.

To deepen our understanding of this concept, we were assigned to analyse a clip of our choice. I decided to focus on a classic Disney 2D animation, The Sword in the Stone, as it laid the groundwork for today’s 3D animation.

Here is the analysed clip:

Moreover, I decided to create a pose for the first time, choosing a straightforward example, to see how it worked in Maya.

For further study next week, I will review the use of timelines in the ‘Animator’s Survival Kit’.
